original and well-maintained early 20th century ornamental wrought iron freestanding interior residential newel post salvaged from the non-extant edward frederick lasar mansion, located in st. louis mo. lasar was the president of lasar ornamental iron and bronze manufacturing, which likely fabricated all of the ironwork within the house. the demolished mansion was constructed in 1906 with oscar enders as designer/architect. enders was chief draftsman for notable st. louis architect, isaac s. taylor, who had a prominent role in the execution of the st. louis world's fair architecture. the distinctive design and fabrication of the ornamental newel post was likely a collaboration between the home and foundry owner and architect. the custom built cast iron staircase railing (available for sale) with illuminated newel post lamp retains the original and highly desirable oxidized copper-plated finish. the staircase is comprised of two angled sections, one straight rail and the newel post with intact fitter and globe. the staircase is accentuated with a repeating bellflower ornament or design motif, which was a common design element during that time. the remarkably built cast iron newel is comprised of a series of square rods that taper towards the top where the globe fitter is mounted. the bellflower motif is flanked by wrought iron strapping with faux rivet heads. measures 7 inches in diameter x 66 inches high.
