original c. 1850's antique american privy dug emerald green iron pontiled soda bottle. the squat body features high shoulders and a tapering neck with applied blob top. the finish has a large bubble in the lip, and an asymmetrical shape. on the front of the body a cleanly struck embossment reads "kohl & beans / mineral water / easton/ pa" the state abbreviation with raised end-letter, sitting right above the heel. the base features a kickup with very slight residue from manufacture with iron pontil. captain george a. kohl was born in 1802 in easton, pennsylvania and was the son of old country germans. kohl appears to have surfaced in lambertville in the the mid-1830s. he first operated a brewery with eden hunt under the name george a. kohl & company. from 1836-1868 george kohl had sole control of the brewery in lambertville, new jersey. kohl's manufacture of mineral waters appears to have started in 1843 or 1844. in 1844 eugene roussel issued a defensive advertisement asserting that an individual in lambertville-presumably kohl- had falsely claimed he was trained by roussel in the art of making mineral waters. kohl was always interested in military affairs and as early as 1840 acquired the title of captain. in 1843, he led the "doylestown guard," a local militia organized in 1835. captain kohl also established the "lambertville cadets" which consisted of 75-20 men, who fought in the civil war. it does not appear that kohl ever served in the military himself. george kohl had connections to breweries in other cities on the east coast of the united states. in addition to his brewery in lambertville, kohl also operated a brewery in easton, pennsylvania, at first on his own and later in partnership with a mr. beans. the exact years of production are not known but kohl & beans were reported to be operating in 1859.
