finely cast and very rare all original dawson ornamental cast iron fireplace mantel frieze designed, patented and fabricated by the dawson brothers, chicago, ills. dawson was known as a prominent chicago-based outfit specializing in gas grates, gas-logs, mantels and mosaic tile work. the c. 1880's high victorian fireplace mantel frieze consists of multiple decorative components bolted together. the traditional cast iron three panel inset with rope motif flanking cherubs with instruments is the most striking feature. the surrounding bracket or enclosure contains two protruding figural brackets that were designed to support a cherry wood shelf. each cast iron bracket consists of visually striking felines surrounded by leafage. the sides of the mantel are adorned with feathered wings and/or mounting brackets positioned on the top and bottom. remarkably, the original copper-plated finish remains largely intact.
