rare and intact privy dug early 1870s irridized amber champagne style bottle manufactured for the hausburg brothers in chicago, il. the embossed front body reads, "h & bro's / chicago", indicating it was manufactured during an iteration of the company in which all three brothers were partnered during the early 1870's. the long, tapering neck is finished with an applied blob top. the smooth base features a circular indent with the manufacturer's name "h & bro's" struck concentrically in the center. this is a singular example of a bottle this size and style by the hausburg brothers, never recorded before. crudities are typical of its age and date of manufacture, including allover rainbow-like patination and some surface scratches. william, gustave, and charles hausberg were mineral water bottlers from their residence at 112 claybourn avenue. prior to this time, gustave hausburg had been a senior partner in two soda or mineral water bottling operations in the sleepy south chicago suburb of blue island. the first hausburg brothers partnership was short lived and by the time the 1874 city directory was published, gustave had left the company, likely to help set up a family bottling works at elgin. during the mid-late 1870's the remaining two brothers became the "hausburg brothers" bottling works in chicago. they continued to bottle together until 1878 after which william took over the operation on his own while charles presumably moved to the operation in elgin. william and charles continued their soda water bottling in chicago at the 112 claybourne residence and then during 1874-75 moved to new quarters at 143 larabee from 1876-1878. william hausburg parted with his brother in 1879 and continued in business alone until 1889.
