completely intact massive c. 1887 heavily ornamented cast iron floor grate salvaged (documented) in 2008 from the north half of the landmarked kaufmann store & flats, designed by the architectural firm of sullivan and adler. the intricately designed victorian era commercial floor grate was designed and fabricated by the tuttle & bailey co, new york city, ny. the black enameled finish remains largely intact with surface wear consistent with age. located at 2310-12 n. lincoln avenue in the city of chicago, the extant kaufmann store & flats is one of the oldest surviving buildings designed by the architectural firm of adler & sullivan. the building was built for druggist ferdinand kaufmann in two phases. the first phase (2310 n. lincoln avenue) consisted of a three-story masonry store and flats, completed in 1883 at a cost of 10,000. the second phase (2312 n. lincoln. avenue) was a four story masonry side addition and one-story addition to the earlier building, completed in 1887 at a cost of 16,000. the building perfectly illustrates the innovative qualities of design and ornamentation that became the basis for further artistic development in such renowned structures as the auditorium building and the carson pirie scott department store. especially notable is the degree to which the distinguishing features of the kaufmann building survive, in the form of ornament in the stone moldings, red terra cotta lunettes and the small lotus flowers topping the first floor pilasters. the c. 1887 floor grate measures 32 3/4 x 32 3/4 inches. original to the building.
