hard to find antique american 19th century railroad passenger car interior "saloon lock" hardware comprised largely of cast brass metal with interior cast iron components. the surface lock and knob with backplate were manufactured by the adams & westlake or "adlake" of chicago, il. the "snowflake" pattern doorknobs are permanently affixed to the decorative rim or surface lock and backplate. the adams & westlake co. the adams & westlake was founded in 1857 in chicago, illinois. in the beginning, they began manufacturing and selling railroad supplies and hardware. with the opening of the american west and expansion of the railroads, the company prospered and diversified. within 45 years, adlake became one of the largest suppliers of equipment to the transportation industry in the world. in 1927, adlake relocated to its present site in elkhart, indiana. priced for the lot.
