exceptionally intact and hard to find american art deco depression era freestanding funeral parlor neon crucifix designed and fabricated by the church & chapel metal arts inc., chicago, il. the ornamented four-pointed latin cross contains a "shadow box" display used for concealing the neon tubing mounted along the inner edges. the full-figure portrayal of jesus christ is made of solid cast aluminum with original, highly detailed hand-painted polychrome enameled finish. minor surface crazing evident. the blue and yellow neon lighting is most impressive. the transformer is concealed within a small metal cabinet mounted against the backside of the cross. the original lamp cord and plug are intact. fully functional. recently salvaged from a south side chicago funeral home. typically, the neon crosses would be sold as a pair, with collapsible stands and carrying case.
