set of four 6 x 6 inch salvaged chicago interior residential fireplace hand-painted ceramic tiles fabricated by the choisy-le-roi faience factory, seine, france. when assembled, the exceptional fireplace tiles show a woman resting a ledge with animals and trial in background. the backside of each tile has been carefully cleaned from mortar. surface wear consistent with age. the tile set (one of two) was salvaged around 1957 from a south side chicago mansion demolished during slum or land clearance. choisy-le-roi began producing porcelain and white earthenware beginning in 1804. after 1860 more relief work was used, with more pieces being glazed with brilliant colors. their majolica work ceased production in 1910.
