late 19th or early 20th century original and largely intact antique american interior residential fireplace mantel "lion" gas insert frame or front designed and fabricated by the lion gas stove company, chicago, il. the heavily ornamented gas grate cover is comprised of cast iron with a mostly uniform antique metallic gold enameled finish. the neoclassical style grate contains a uniquely-shaped tiered hood adorned with leafage and anthemions. the top left and right corners feature two protruding lion heads. the perforated ball-and-stick ash grille and the grate or guard used to partially conceal the rows of jets (removed) are free from damage. two virtually identical gas inserts available in addition to this ornamented fireplace front. salvaged from a chicago residence constructed between 1897-1904. measures 24 x 31 inches.
