late 19th or early 20th century original antique american interior residential fireplace mantel "lion gas grate" designed and fabricated by the lion gas stove company, chicago, il. the heavily ornamented gas grate or insert is comprised of cast iron with the original antique metallic gold enameled finish remaining largely intact. the neoclassical style grate contains a uniquely-shaped tiered hood adorned with leafage and anthemions. the top left and right corners feature two protruding lion heads. the perforated ball-and-stick ash grille and the grate or guard used to partially conceal the rows of jets are free from damage. two virtually identical gas inserts available. salvaged from a chicago residence constructed between 1897-1904. priced individually. measures 24 x 31 inches, with an inset of 17 1 /2 x 13 inches
