antique american victorian era ornamental cast iron newel post with a largely intact black paint finish. fabricated by the dearborn foundry co., chicago, il. the exterior newel features a unique embossed ring ball finial resting atop a pedimented base. removed from the outdoor stoop of a chicago graystone residence undergoing demolition. the floor or base plates containing pre-drilled holes remain largely intact. the dearborn foundry manufactured several different sizes of this particular design. originally installed at the stoop landing and reinforced with interconnected tubular iron rails, supported by brackets mounted on the stone treads leading to the entrance door. measures 6 x 6 x 35 1/2 inches.
