original weathered and worn documented c. 1876 turned solid walnut wood interior commercial building staircase multifaceted newel post likely fabricated by palmer, fuller & co., chicago, il. the well-built turned and tapered wood newel post quite possibly may have been turned by fehly frederick according to documents.the staircase landing post contains a circular-shaped top cap fastened with both a large wood screw and peg. the screw is exposed when the topmost tapered finial is carefully removed. the post contains an old brown paint finish that has worn considerably over time. the chicago newel post is structurally sound and solid. several newel posts, both turned and comprised of solid walnut were salvaged from the structure. railings and matching spindles are available from each of the many staircases removed. base measures 7 x 7 inches, with a height of 39 inches. the top extends out to 19 inches.
