completely intact american art deco style interior palmolive building wall mount elevator indicator plaques. comprised of cast bronze with the original nickel-plated finish largely intact. each hexagonal opening contains a multi-faceted white opalescent glass inset, originally illuminated from behind. very simple and unadorned streamlined design, with deeply incised lines outlining and or intersecting the two glass insets. the exact fabricator is not known. priced individually. the art deco style palmolive building was built by the architectural firm of holabird & root in 1929. the 37 story chicago landmark was originally home to colgate-palmolive-peet. a beacon named for the aviator charles lindbergh was added to the building in 1930. it rotated a full 360 degrees and was intended to help guide airplanes safely to midway airport. the beacon ceased operation in 1981 following complaints from residents of nearby buildings. the palmolive building came to be known as the playboy building when it was home to playboy magazine from 1965 to 1989. during this time, the word p-l-a-y-b-o-y was spelled out in 9 feet illuminated letters. the building was recently converted for residential use by developer draper and kramer. the first two floors house upscale office and retail space. high-end condos make up the rest of the building. priced individually. 10" x 4.75"
