exceptionally well-maintained and completely intact c. 1930's american art deco machine age wall-mount palmolive liquid soap dispenser designed and patented by philip a. wooster of san francisco, ca. the clear glass tapered vessel retains the original baked-on green enameled lettering. the pointed and stepped finial cap is comprised of steel with original polished chrome plated finish largely intact. the bracket and functional plunger are comprised of brass with a chrome plated finish. the soap dispenser was still in use (powdered soap content left in place) prior to being salvaged from a commercial building washroom. the glass chamber is free from cracks or breaks. palmolive soap traces its roots back to the late 19th century, where the b.j. johnson company (milwaukee, wi.) was making a soap entirely of palm and olive oil, the formula of which was developed by b.j. johnson in 1898. the soap was popular enough to rename their company after it - "palmolive." at the turn of the century palmolive, which contained both palm and olive oils, was the world's best-selling soap. extensive advertising included the palmolive hour, a weekly radio concert program which began in 1927 and palmolive beauty box theater which ran from 1934 to 1937. a missouri-based soap manufacturer known as peet brothers merged with palmolive to become palmolive-peet. in 1928, palmolive-peet bought the colgate company to create the colgate-palmolive-peet company. in 1953 "peet" was dropped from the title, leaving only "colgate-palmolive company", the current name. measures 3 1/2 x 6 1/2 x 7 1/2 inches.
