single original 19th century medium-sized american victorian era ornamental cast iron "chicago style" black enameled newel post designed and fabricated by the dearborn foundry co., chicago, il. the exterior freestanding newel post features a unique embossed ring ball finial resting atop a pedimented base. the newel post was salvaged from the outdoor stoop of a chicago three-story victorian brick rowhouse undergoing demolition. the floor or base plates containing pre-drilled holes remain largely intact. the dearborn foundry manufactured several different sizes of this particular design. originally installed at the stoop landing and reinforced with interconnected tubular iron rails, supported by brackets mounted on the stone treads leading to the entrance door. the bare metal finish has been sealed with a clear coat lacquer. measures 6 x 6 x 37 inches.
