single original late 1860's intact pre-fire chicago solidly constructed walnut wood freestanding interior 500 milwaukee avenue commercial building staircase newel post possibly fabricated by the c.j.l. meyer mfg. co., chicago, il. the simple, yet elegant profile achieved with the use of a steam-powered lathe is very typical of this time period. a small section of bolted (from the underside) handrail remains in great shape. multiple lengths of walnut railing available. several matching newel posts of this style and/or profile were salvaged from the front and rear staircases of this building (residential living on the upper floors). the original cap or finial remains intact. the heavily worn newel has darkened considerably over the past several decades.
