original late 19th century ornamental cast iron interior elevator indicator light, salvaged from the adler & sullivan schiller building (later the garrick theater) prior to demolition in 1960. the up/down light indicator was not specifically designed by louis sullivan. the elevator indicator was likely fabricated by winslow brothers or the elevator supply company, chicago, ills. the cast iron fixture was likely installed shortly after construction was completed. the original copper-plated finish remains virtually intact. the elevator indicator features acanthus leaf design motifs skillfully executed in deep relief. additional pictures show one of these fixtures "in situ." the art deco stepped globes are no doubt a later replacement for the more conventional ball-shaped white opalescent globes. the fixture contains no globes. the 1891-92 mixed use building was a unique solution to the problem of placing a large theater and office building on a mid-block site. the end result was the first skyscraper designed on a set-back principle. the plan was roughly i-shaped: a central 17-story tower with flanking nine-story wings. a narrower 14-story wing extended into the back alley. the theater was placed in the central, windowless portion of the structure, while the offices above and on the street side received ample natural light. in 1893, frank lloyd wright took an office on the 16th floor. the building was demolished in 1960. through the efforts of many individuals and organizations, the schiller building was thoroughly photographed, and a salvage project was undertaken to persevere most of the florid sullivan ornament found throughout the interior and exterior surfaces. measure 8 1/2 x 4 x 8 1/2 inches. only one available.
