original historically important early 20th century ornamental neoclassical style cast iron cresting fragment removed from the kiosk and/or overhead van buren street metra station entrance, located in downtown chicago. the single-sided decorative fragment features deep relief scrollwork and central palmette motif. the station, which was built in 1896, is the oldest active station building on the metra electric line. the station serves the metra electric line and the south shore line, which is operated by the northern indiana commuter transportation district. it serves about 10,000 passengers a day. van buren has four entrances, three at the intersection of michigan ave. and van buren and one on jackson blvd. in grant park. in 2001, the city of paris gave chicago a replica of an art nouveau-style paris metro entrance, which adorns one of the entrances at michigan avenue. the fragment was removed from the west side kiosk during restoration of the neoclassical ironwork. the fabricator is not known.
