intact c. 1880-1882 privy dug deep blue aqua soda or mineral water bottle fabricated for chicago bottler louis sass. the slim body and sloping shoulders are finished with a short neck and applied oval blob top. the front of the glass features caseworn embossing that reads, "louis h sass / trade mark / s & h / chicago ill" (note the name spelling, "louis" though in some sources his name is spelled "lewis"). the base is smooth. crudities are typical of its age and date of manufacture, including surface wear, discoloration and irridization from being dug. the "s & h" on this bottle stands for "sass & hafner", the partnership of louis sass and william hafner from 1866-1879. in the early 1880's hafner joined the hartt manufacturing company, and louis sass bottled water alone at 41 n. peoria. in 1883 sass went into partnership with gustav pomy and by 1887 were bought out by john lomax, when he formed the chicago consolidated bottling company.
