late 19th century original antique american interior cable building lobby elevator floor indicator lantern possibly fabricated by or for the elevator supply & repair company, chicago, il. the single-globe lantern contains a frosted glass shade with the word "down" lightly etched on two sides. the ornamental cast iron wall-mount sconce features a repeating detailed acanthus leaf design motif divided by a central ring with beaded border. traces of the original copper-plated finish evident. the illuminated fixture contains two sockets, but with this configuration only one globe was used. the opposite side or opening retains the original cast iron cap with diminutive ball finial. designed by the notable firm, holabird and roche, the cable building was completed in 1899 for the cable piano company. the chicago school commercial building with ornamental terra cotta facade, was demolished in the fall of 1960. photographer richard nickel managed to capture a number of well-documented images shortly before demolition. only one lantern available.
