rare early chicago exterior hand carved solid sandstone window lunette salvaged from the springer block building prior to demolition by three oaks wrecking in 1990. the fanciful american victorian era window header or lunette was carved or sculpted by james legge in 1872 for the springer block, constructed shortly after the great chicago fire. the four-story loft style commercial building was a typical example of post-chicago fire architecture, where abstract plant forms were often incised in sandstone keystones, lunettes, cornices and the like. the springer block building was designed and built by the chicago partnership of carter, drake and wight. the lunette was located above the windows on the fourth floor of the loft building. an identical lunette is on permanent display at the art institute of chicago museum. the stone lunette measures 38 x 19 x 6 inches.
