c. 1907 antique american ornamental cast bronze monogrammed interior guestroom door plaza hotel doorknob and matching backplate likely fabricated by the sargent hardware co., new haven, ct. the backplate and doorknob contain nicely detailed and deeply embossed leafage along the edges. the circular hole originally contained a cylinder lock. the oval-shaped doorknob and backplate have been darkened with an oil-rubbed metallic bronze enameled finish. the extant plaza hotel is located at fifth avenue and central park south was built in 1907 by architect henry janeway hardenbergh, who also designed the famed dakota apartments on the upper westside. construction of the 19 story building took two years to build at a cost of 12 million dollars. the number of historic events and people of fame affiliated with this grand hotel is quite staggering. in recent times, the hotel underwent a massive overhaul, stripping the building of several original architectural elements. priced for the set. 7 1/2" x 2 1/4".
