early 20th century antique american residential entrance door "new departure" mechanical doorbell fabricated by the new departure mfg. co., bristol, ct. the uniquely designed and playfully ornamented rococo style doorbell or "gong" is comprised of cast bronze with original oxidized copper finish remaining largely intact. the perforated base or mounting plate containing the gears and hammers, is made of cast iron with matching plated finish. the device is operated by rotating the key, by means of a knob or t-handle, either to the right or left, which communicates to the hammer-shaft (creating a rapid rotary motion), whereby the hammers are caused to strike the inner surface of the bell or gong in rapid succession. excellent overall condition. measures approximately 5 inches in diameter.
