late 1920's original and intact american art deco style oversized blue opalescent pressed glass pendant light fixture shade or globe attributed to the phoenix glass co., pittsburgh, pa. two matching shades were discovered in the basement of an old chicago area pharmacy. the fixtures were removed long ago. the turned and tapered shade contains a distinctive surface textures that provides added visual character. the drugstore globe or shade is free from cracks or breaks. the phoenix glass company was organized in 1880, by andrew howard, formerly connected with the union line of the pennsylvania railroad company, with a capitalization of $30,000. the company was reorganized in 1891, the capitalization being $700,000. its plant was located at monaca, beaver county, pa., on the new york central lines, and occupied a space of about ten acres. the company was originally organized for the manufacture of specialties, but later made a very large line of lamp chimneys, and was the first company west of the allegheny mountains to produce opalescent and rich cut glass. by the early 20th century, they were the largest exclusive manufacturers of illuminating glassware in the united states, to which they devoted their entire efforts. two matching shades available. base diameter measures 6 inches, height measures 14 inches. priced individually.
