c. 1890's original ornamental cast bronze interior rand mcnally building lobby elevator indicator light with original red and white glass roundels. the wall mount lobby signal plaque was believed to have been salvaged from the rand mcnally building sometime around its demolition in 1911. the short-livedbuilding was designed by architects burnham and root, and was the world's first all-steel framed skyscraper. it was erected in 1889 at a cost of a million dollars. it had 10 stories, 16 stores, and 300 offices, but the main tenant was rand, mcnally & co., printers and publishers, with 900 employees. the general offices of the chicago, milwaukee & st. paul railway were located on the 2nd and 3rd floors, as were the headquarters of the world's columbian exposition, on the 4th and 5th. the long distance telephone company (quincy street side) allowed patrons the ability to telephone new york city, a novelty at the time. it was torn down in 1911 and a taller building of that era still stands on the site. the indicator plaque features two large color-coded convex-shaped roundels surround by intricately designed floral motifs and beaded border. the lenses are damaged, but original nonetheless. nicely aged surface patina throughout. likely fabricated by the winslow brothers, chicago, il. measures 17 x 9 3/4 inches.
