rare late 19th century all original documented american folk art oversized painted wood city street or trolley car. the hand-crafted trolley car was meticulously assembled in january of 1892 by o.r. jones of youngstown, ohio, for son h.o. jones and later presented to grandson william s. jones in 1934 (this information is painted in black lettering along the underside of the trolley). the delicate but completely intact street car is comprised mainly of wood with a pressed and folded painted tin roof with heavy gauge metal wire used for supporting the overhangs and handrails. the small coil resting atop the hipped roof presumably represents a single arm pantograph used for collecting current from overhead lines. the exterior sides contain a bay or bank of six small windows with individually cut clear panes of glass. the trolley's interior contains passenger seating, in the form of two benches separated by a central aisle. the functional black enameled wheels are comprised of turned wood. amazingly, the original polychrome enameled finish is virtually intact with allover crazing consistent with age. the underside contains a brief hand-written message likely added on july 4, 1934 when the trolley was handed down to grandson william s. jones. an amber shellac or varnish was applied over the message in an attempt to protect or preserve it from wear and/or other unexpected detriments. the trolley's original exterior painted finish received a similar treatment that has aged nicely over time. no further information was found regarding the exact year and/or circumstances surrounding the transfer of the trolley from family to open market. the remarkable hand-crafted artifact truly exemplifies the high level of skill and inventiveness found in exceptional, museum-quality american folk art. measures 28 x 15 x 10 inches. reference only.
