original and intact c. 1880's bright green wide mouth pickle jar manufactured for chicago wholesale grocers gustav glaser and alfred kohn. the body features an unusual patterned mold with raised bumps or covering the bottle from the shoulder down. in the center is a slanted stamp with heavily embossed lettering "glaser, kohn & co / importers & packers / chicago". the cylindrical jar has no distinct shoulders and is finished with a single applied ring. this bottle was salvaged from a landfill south of downtown chicago that yielded dozens of mid to late nineteenth century bottles. business and city directories indicate glaser, kohn & company operated at 26 michigan avenue, and were in business from at least 1884 until the early 1900's. in 1887, the company was listed as manufacturing flavoring extracts. they also trademarked an article of food made from grain in 1884, and patented a bottle in 1891. the company was involved in legal cases around 1910 involving a violation of the pure-food law by adulteration of preserves and food products.
