original antique c. mid-1840's green iron pontiled soda bottle manufactured for new york bottler dr. brown. the squat body and sloping shoulders taper into a short, narrow neck finished with an applied tapered collar. the crude finish exhibits slop, whittling, and surface wear. a smooth chip at the bottom of the finish appears to be asymmetry produced during manufacturing. the body features a clean strike in the form of a deeply embossed 'b' on one side, and "dr. brown" with a raised letter 'r' on the reverse. there is a very faint indented square next to the embossed 'b', possibly from a peened out slug plate. the base has a domed kickup with light residue from the iron pontil. the vibrant glass features allover whittling, and no haze or discoloration. dr. brown's was created in 1869 and was commonly sold in new york delicatessens and by soda salesmen who sold the product from door to door in jewish neighborhoods. according to former marketing director, harry gold, a new york doctor used celery seeds and sugar to invent the cream soda and celery tonic now known as cel-ray, which was advertised as a "pure beverage for the nerves." measures 7 inches in height.
