hard to find and highly sought after oversized early 20th century head building engineer's heavy gauge cold-rolled steel "art metal" roll top desk designed and fabricated by the art metal construction company, jamestown, ny. the unusually configured combination desk and cabinet originally contained the popular "oak grain" faux enameled finish. the lockable roll top consists of interconnected pressed and formed steel slats that collectively roll through slots or "tracks" along the raised edges of the desk. the remarkably heavy duty "fireproof" c. 1918 steel desk contains multiple sliding drawers and cabinet file modules equipped with original bronze metal handles or pulls and placard holders. the oversized cabinet and/or desk was used, beginning in 1918, in the sub-basement of the chicago athletic association building located on michigan avenue. the square-shaped tubular steel legs are in great condition, considering age. the entire exterior has been brushed down to bare metal and sealed with a clear coat lacquer. measures approximately 65 1/2 x 31 x 49 1/2 inches.
