outstanding late 19th century american victorian era ornamental iron interior residential fireplace coal or wood burning basket. the remarkably heavy and well-executed cast iron stationary basket features centrally located winged cherubs flanked by dense foliated scrollwork and leafage. the detachable fire pit grate is original and intact. the heavily ornamented basket is supported by four ball and claw feet. mostly uniform metallic gold enameled finish. possibly fabricated by the peerless mfg. co., louisville, ky. measures 24 x 14 3/8 x 15 1/4 inches.
