completely refinished c. 1920's american antique industrial freestanding single electric "ghost light" used in an old chicago theater building. the majority of the parts were cobbled together at some point in time. the only identifiable piece is the metal wire incandescent light bulb cage or bulb "guard." the steel pipe is comprised of multiple fittings. the interior four-legged theater stage auditorium "cleaner" light or lamp stand features fanciful curvaceous legs with foot pads for added stability. the top most fitting or light source consists of an appleton "explosion proof" fixture with impact-resistant clear glass globe. the theater stage light has been brushed down to bare metal and sealed with a clear coat lacquer. there are many myths and/or legends surrounding the purpose and use of the ghost light (e.g., deter the presence of old ghosts), but according to a number of 1920's theater supply catalogs, the single light fixtures were referred to as "cleaner stands" and/or portable work lights. measures 23 x 23 x 56 inches.
