original rare and completely intact c. 1870's deep emerald green saratoga style quart size spring water bottle fabricated for bottling "old red spring" water. the full bodied glass has steep shoulders and a long neck, finished with an applied double tapered collar or oil finish, that exhibits slop. the front body is embossed cleanly "saratoga / red /spring". the base is smooth, and side seams evidence manufacture with a two leaf mold. crudities are typical of its age and date of manufacture, including allover seeding, an "onion skin" bubble, and whittling. completely intact and in good condition. the longest known, or most famous, of the mineral springs of saratoga, was the high rock spring, known as the "medicine spring" of the mohawks long before it was visited by white men. this, with the flat rock spring and red spring were for many years the only known springs in saratoga. the old red spring was discovered soon after the revolutionary war by a mr. norton, who had been driven from the place by hostile native americans. norton returned around 1784 to reoccupy buildings erected by him for the accommodation of several invalids who visited the various springs. there, at red springs, the first bath house was built around 1784. the spring was known as the bathing or "beauty" spring because of its reputation for curing skin ailments. it is low in minerals and relatively high in iron.
