single c. 1890's original antique american ornamental cast iron interior chicago commercial building or hotel elevator signal lantern designed and fabricated by the winslow brothers foundry, chicago, il. the exact chicago building from which the elevator lantern was salvaged from is not known at this time. research for identifying the building in progress. the finely cast lantern houses a single socket and at one point in time contained a glass globe. the signal lantern was configured to notify passengers of an elevator cab moving up only. when called. the original glass ball-shaped globe was likely ruby red with "up" in lightly etched lettering. the body or socket housing contains richly ornate acanthus leaves along the top with a tapered cap containing a ball finial at the bottom. the curvaceous protruding arm features intricate gothic elements and sullivanesque style leafage. the unornamented backplate is comprised of cast iron with two opposed holes for mounting flush against the wall. the elevator indicator lamp was no doubt salvaged from an important chicago building. the metallic gold enameled finish was likely applied long after installation. a double-light variation is available.
