two matching c. 1924 neoclassical style ornamental cast iron office door escutcheons salvaged from the extant continental & commercial national bank building located in downtown chicago - in an area commonly referred to as the "la salle street canyon." the doorknob backplates contain a uniform brushed metal finish treated with a clear coat lacquer. manufactured by "russwin" or the russell & erwin mfg. co., new britain, ct. the continental & commercial national bank building was built in 1914 by the chicago architect, daniel burnham. the design pattern appears to have been specific to this building, which echoes the overall neoclassical design scheme found in both the interior and exterior of the bank. the simple yet elegant backplates contains a repeating bellflower motif border. the backplates measure approximately 10 x 3 1/8 inches. priced for the pair.
