schlitz brewery, milwaukee, wi.
single turn of the century amber embossed glass beer bottles fabricated for major milwaukee brewery schlitz. the tall and slender 16 oz bottle is finished with a long, slightly bulging neck and a blobtop collar. the front body is heavily embossed with the bold cursive "schlitz" logo. the schlitz brewing company was founded in 1849 by august krug, and was acquired by joseph schlitz in 1858. schlitz had actually been hired as a bookkeeper in a tavern owned by krug and took over management of the brewery following krug's death. at the turn of the century, schlitz was the biggest beer producer and became famous due to slogans like "the beer that made milwaukee famous" and "when you're out of schlitz, you're out of beer". in 1911 schlitz was the first to introduce brown glass bottles, preventing light from spoiling the contents inside.
