lot of three turn of the century amber embossed glass beer bottles fabricated for major milwaukee breweries pabst and schlitz. the tall and slender 16 oz bottles are finished with crown cap collars. the front body of each is heavily embossed. the lot includes two different schlitz bottles: one featuring the company name in large script with "registered" at the heel; the second features a globe logo along with company name and "this bottle is never sold" inside a banner. the pabst bottle features "pabst milwaukee" inside a circular logo, with central "b" and leaf logo. the schlitz brewing company was founded in 1849 by august krug, and was acquired by joseph schlitz in 1858. schlitz had actually been hired as a bookkeeper in a tavern owned by krug and took over management of the brewery following krug's death. at the turn of the century, schlitz was the biggest beer producer and became famous due to slogans like "the beer that made milwaukee famous" and "when you're out of schlitz, you're out of beer". in 1911 schlitz was the first to introduce brown glass bottles, preventing light from spoiling the contents inside. pabst brewing company began as best and company, founded by jacob best and his four sons in 1844. the family had moved to milwaukee from germany after abandoning an unsuccessful wine venture in the 1830's. charles and lorenz, two of jacob's sons, left soon after to start the plank road brewery, which quickly changed hands when lorenz passed away from the cholera epidemic. frederick miller eventually bought the plank road brewery. in the meantime best and company continued to rise in popularity. captain frederick pabst, who married philip best's daughter, eventually got involved in the business. best brewing, like all other breweries, was still struggling to find a way to increase their market while keeping the product cold and fresh. a solution arrived in the wake of chicago's great fire of 1871, with pabst suggesting that they provide beer to chicagoans by packing ice blocks onto railroad cars with the beer. pabst was at the helm of a now national brewing company, and the brewery officially change its name in 1889. four years later, in 1893, chicago delivered the brewery its iconic trademark, awarding the beer a blue ribbon at the world's columbian exposition. from then on pabst had little blue ribbons hand-tied to the neck of every bottle shipped out, calling it first pabst select, and then pabst blue ribbon. by the time of prohibition the brewery was being managed by pabst's sons, who kept the company afloat by selling alternatives like malt extract.
