absolutely remarkable and well-executed oversized exterior building facade circular-shaped glazed terra cotta medallion attributed to the american terra cotta company, chicago, il. the highly desirable art deco style terra cotta medallion or rondel retains the original lustrous hand-applied gold leaf finish. the exterior building ornament was set into the building, where only the ornamental face sat flush against the facade's surface. the rondel features highly stylized flowers, volutes, leafage and a centrally located 8-pointed star in relief. the webbing or cavities on the backside are intact and serve to reinforce the structural integrity of the terra cotta element. loose mortar and brick have been removed to lessen the overall weight. exceptional american art deco building element salvaged from a chicago commercial building demolished long ago. the gold leaf rondel measures at 32 inches in diameter.
