william mcmanus, franklin, new jersey.
single rare and hard to find nearly intact antique american c. mid-1840's open pontiled green glass early soda bottle fabricated in franklin, new jersey for william mcmanus. the porter-like body has steep, low shoulders and a long straight neck finished with a repair or replica of the broken finish, a single tapered collar. the front body is embossed, "mcmanus's / mineral / water". at the base is a large central open pontil scar. crudities are typical of its age and date of manufacture including bubbles, whittling, and minor surface wear. the bottle is completely intact other than the top, which is replaced by a resin replica, reattached at the break. this particular piece is one of only three known bottles. william mcmanus is a bottler who was once attributed as being philadelphia-based, since a broken bottle was found there in 2009, and census records place a william mcmanus there. during the fall of 2011, an intact example was found in an old home in franklin, new jersey and research placed a william mcmanus between 1840 and 1850. since neither city's records definitively show a "bottler" by that name, it is either manufactured in the philadelphia or south jersey region. it is an unusual bottle in that it has the name in arched lettering, rather than in straight lines, as bottles up to this point. this particular fragment was found in philadelphia.
