remarkably intact american early 1880's victorian era ornamental salvaged chicago terra cotta keystone possibly fabricated by american or the chicago terra cotta company, chicago, ills. known officially as "brownstone," this type of terra cotta ornament was often unglazed in a dark red or brown finish. the exterior window and door keystones with hollowed rear cavities were used by architects such as richard upjohn, james renwick, h. h. richardson, etc., during this time. the keystone features a detailed acanthus leaf resting below a protruding scroll or volute. the darkened and or black patina was caused from prolonged exposure to the exterior elements, including coal soot. several keystones in various styles were salvaged from a chicago commercial building located near the esquire theater. the building has since been razed. the 19th century salvaged chicago keystone measures 11 1/4 x 10 1/2 x 33 1/2 inches.
