gibson's soap polish, new york, ny and omaha, ne
rare and intact late nineteenth or early twentieth century oversized lithographed tin proof or template sheet comprised of ten repeating "gibson's soap polish" labels salvaged from insulation material in a chicago worker's cottage. the unusual metal sheet appears likely to have been sheared into individual strips that would have comprised a round canister, or the label adhered to such a container. the "front" of the multi-color lithographed label features a blue photographic image, presumably of the company's founder, and surrounding text "established 1899 / gibson's soap polish / the king of cleaners / a cleaning powder." below this is advertising text, and the phrase "this is not sapolio, but it is as far superior as sapolio is to a common brick" in reference to a rival soap company. the reverse features instructions for use. the text is largely legible, though the metal does feature surface wear typical of its age and use as insulating material in a residential structure.
