finely crafted and hard to find original and intact american aesthetic movement varnished walnut wood interior residential staircase landing newel post possibly fabricated by the goss & phillips mfg. co., chicago. il. the octagonal-shaped two-tone newel post was salvaged from a chicago italianate residence demolished long ago. the multi-faceted newel contains deeply recessed panels with burled walnut. the finely turned and tapered newel cap is original free from excessive wear. the components are held together with a long solid iron thru-bolt or rod. the original varnished finish remains largely intact with minor crazing evident. the freestanding post-fire newel post measures 11 x 41inches.
