very unusual early 20th century american industrial upright metal filing storage cabinet manufactured by the fire-proof furniture & construction co., miamisburg, oh. the folded and pressed cold-rolled steel freestanding cabinet contains an assortment of vertical and horizontal pull-out drawers in various sizes. the multi-configured cabinet originally contained blueprints, index cards and other court-related legal documents. the simple, yet elegant, yellow brass handles and/or knob pulls feature riveted joint backplates. placard slots are original and intact. the steel cabinet retains the original quartered oak wood faux grain finish. the detachable four-legged base is comprised of solid oak wood. measures 16 3/4 x 26 3/4 x 62 inches. the fire-proof furniture & construction company was originally established in hamilton, ohio, as a subsidiary of the herring-hall-marvin sale co., to manufacture light office furniture. in 1910, the city of miamisburg, ohio offered a free site to build a plant or factory under the name fireproof furniture & construction co. around 1915, they bought the united states steel furniture co. in syracuse, ny. the miamisburg plant closed in 1916 when the company moved operations to new jersey. globe-wernicke later bought out the company in 1928.
