unique and unusual early 20th century double-sided heavy cast iron elongated oval-shaped "drive slowly" chicago city street traffic sign. the heavy duty sign was originally mounted on a freestanding pole. the circular plate with two pre-drilled holes at the top suggests the sign may have been mounted flush against the underside of a bridge or overpass, perhaps even as street light brackets. the two small protruding holes were likely used for supporting a hanging sign containing additional precautionary statements or perhaps a directional arrow. possibly fabricated by the colonial sign co., akron, oh. old red and white enameled finish. deeply embossed lettering with centrally located diamond flanked by lines. measures 20 x 14 inches.
