original turn of the century blue aque hutchinson style soda bottle manufactured for chicago brewers, the hofmann brothers. the tall slim body has high shoulders, a squat neck and an applied oval blob top. on the front body, embossed in a tombstone shaped slug plate "hofmann bros / chicago" surrounds an eagle logo. side seams and smooth base evidence manufacture in a two-piece mold. the dug bottle has been lightly cleaned (not tumbled) and appears in good condition with some discoloration and patination. crudities are typical of its age and date of condition, including surface wear, bubbles and whittling. the brewer & hofmann brewing company was formed in 1886 by william brewer, a.m. hofmann, george hofmann, valentine hofmann, and m.c. mcdonald. in 1890 the business passed into the hands of a receiver and was closed in 1902. the hofmann brothers were part of a large, multi-generational family of brewers. from 1880-1881 they bottled beer at the corner of lake and n. sangamon in chicago. they apperently lived with their father george, sr., a retired hotelkeeper, and moved to chicago specifically to start their bottling business.
