original late 1850's lightly tumbled antique american privy dug medium emerald porter style iron pontiled bottle manufactured for morton & bros in newark, new jersey. the mid-19th century bottle was possibly fabricated by the phoenix glass works out of pittsburgh, pa. the squat body is finished with an applied tapered collar with single ring and slope over. the bottle base features a high kick-up with a strong presence of ring-shaped iron oxide residue. there is a small chip at the front of the base. crudities typical of its age include bubbles in the body, and asymmetrical shape. "morton & bros" "newark n. j." is embossed cleanly along the front of the bottle. the morton brothers brewery was founded by general john cumming in 1805, and operated under the morton name between 1832-1838. in 1850, the sons of thomas morton (who had died in 1847), thomas, jr., robert and john, began running the brewery as the morton & brother(s) brewing company. by the 1870's morton & brother were among the largest brewers in newark, nj.
