deep emerald green iron pontiled porter bottle manufactured by n. richardson in trenton, n.j. bottle is finished with an applied tapered lip and a single ringed collar. typical crudities include whittling at the neck and finish, and bubbles in the body. well embossed block lettering reads "n. richardson" in an arc, and beneath that the place of manufacture, "trenton n.j.". the base has an asymmetrical domed kick-up and a seam which extends from the base edge up the sides of the body. there is no residual iron but a round abrasion from the pontil. the most prominent men in trenton brewing and bottling during the 1850s and 60s were william morton and nathan richardson. william morton was born ireland in 1819 and richardson, born in new hampshire 1806. they moved to trenton between 1844 and 1848 and by the mid 1850s they were in business together. they dominated local bottling until 1864 when richardson invested in the lafayette hotel with l. s. sutphin, temporarily leaving bottling. by 1870 morton was retired, the hotel business in a slump at the end of the civil war and richardson returned to bottling with his son charles h as richardson and son. morton died in 1873, and richardson in 1876. records show they had become affluent local businessmen with considerable assets.
