19th century victorian-era antique american salvaged chicago majolica-glazed fireplace tile surround designed and fabricated by the american encaustic tile company, zanesville, oh. the reddish-brown majolica glazed tiles consist of deeply embossed floral motfis accentuated with two corner tiles with male and female shakespearean figures. the surround contains 1-2 extra tiles (depending on firebox opening) with one having an old repair (see image). the tiles are in good overall condtion with any and all brick or mortar removed from the back sides. the 1890's tile set was salvaged from a chicago residence undergoing demolition.
