large lot (24 matching bottles) of early 1900's antique american intact soda bottles contained within the original fanciful stenciled letter pine wood carrying crate designed and manufactured for use with chicago-based henry burkhardt bottles. the crate itself is stamped lengthwise on both sides in black lettering “henry burkhardt / jefferson & 18th sts. / chicago” with vine-like ornamentation. width wise, one side has a circular stamp that reads “union made” on either side of a small box logo, and less legibly “ united order of… america” around the edge. below there is a somewhat worn “to / henry burkhardt / …436. chicago” stamp indented in the wood. the crate has built-in dividers with slats for holding the neck of each bottle. the portable and stackable case contains smooth cut-out handles on either side. all 24 soda bottles are intact and matching, with variation only in condition and color. the machine-made aqua blue and green glass bottles are finished with a crown tops and feature subtle seams running vertically from the smooth bases to the top of the lips. each bottle is deeply embossed “this bottle only loaned / never sold / henry burkhardt” followed by a monogram of an overlapping ‘h’ and ‘b’, and the address “18th & jefferson sts”. just above the heel it reads “ registered / 7 fl. oz." crudities typical to age and date of manufacture include surface scratches and bubbles, varying by bottle. the crate measures 18 x 11 x 8, while the bottles measure 2 ½ wide x 7 ¾ high.
