two matching original c. 1930's art deco machine age "z" bar stools complete with bright cherry red oil cloth upholstered seats. the chrome plated tubular steel frames remain structurally sound and sturdy. each stool contains the highly desiable crossbar foot rest. the matching stoos were manufactured by the troy sunshade co., which during the great depression, developed a new "chrome furniture" enterprise. the stools were designed by gilbert rohde, a self taught furniture designer influenced by both the bauhaus and late french art deco. while rohde succeeded in his mission-insofar as he led herman miller to the forefront of mass-produced modern design-his accomplishments led, ironically, to under appreciation. he died suddenly and relatively young, and the dynamic design achievements of his successors at herman miller, such as charles and ray eames, george nelson, and isamu noguchi, effectively eclipsed rohde's reputation, and, more importantly, obscured his surprising foresight in the realm of modern design. priced for the pair. height 24" x depth 15".
