mid-nineteenth century privy dug emerald green porter style pontiled bottle manufactured for e.c. ware in philadelphia, pa. the sloping shoulders and squat neck are finished with an applied tapered collar and ring with some whittling and tooling marks. the body has allover seeding and bubbles. the base features a high domed kick-up from manufacture with iron pontil. the manufacturer and city are embossed in block lettering on the front of the glass. ware was an itinerant bottler born in new jersey. in 1847 he was a bottler in philadelphia. he moved and bottled in lancaster in the early 1850s, and moved back to philadelphia to work for robert duffield, eventually taking over his business. in the 1860 census, ware was living in stockton, camden county and fought in the civil war.
